BC SuperWeek: Tour de Delta

The Jittery Joe’s Pro Cycling Team have had a successful start to BC Superweek, Vancouver, Canada. The Tour de Delta was the first race in the week long event. Matt Shriver took 2nd overall, after being in a breakaway in the Criterium that gained time on the Symmetrics dominated field. For the first time the tour moved from being an Omnium event, to a timed Stage Race. With the time difference and the bonus seconds on offer at the finish line, Matt was able to move onto the GC Podium by placing 2nd in the crit. Evan Elken performed leadout duties helping Cody Stevenson take 5th. Trent Wilson, in his first race back was looking strong and covering moves, along with Jared Barrilleaux and Tim Henry.

In the road race, Trent Wilson was in a day long escape that netted him 8 of the 10 KOM Competition climbs, clinching the KOM prize for the race. With 2 laps to go it was evident that it was to be a field sprint. Switching rolls for the sprint, Stevenson was to lead out Elken, as it was a slight uphill, headwind sprint and suited the strong man, and recent winner of a stage at Tour de Beauce. Coming out of the last corner, with about 600m to go, there was a shift in the group causing a rider to hit the back end of Elken’s bike. This in turn caused a gap, and took Elken out of contention for the win. Stevenson, in lead out duties, was one spot ahead of the melee and took 2nd on the stage. Elken did however regain some position and being the strong man that he is was able to take 4th place. Had it not been for the mishap, Elken was looking strong for win number 2 for 2008.
Jared and Tim both covered moves and help to keep Matt solid in his CG position.

Gastown is next on the program.

Thanks for your report Cody. I was watching the presentation ceremony for the Tour de White Rock in front of the podium with my young son who had had enough of bike racing for the day! Great race yesterday in the Tour de White Rock, team Jittery Joes. Thanks for the blogs and reports, they give a really good sense of the toil, teamwork and triumph involved in traveling and competing all over the world at the pro level. I used to compete in lightweight rowing so I have a tiny inkling of what it must be like to push yourself again and again to your limits and beyond. I have great respect for all the work you do in training and in the races. Way to go Team Jittery Joes. There are some great photos by Rod Kenny of this year’s Tour de White Rock posted on Flikr.
