The Official Jittery Joe’s Pro Cycling Team Blog

After the boys finished up with the tour and I finished up crashing all over the place at Athens Twilight, it was on to the NRC weekend of Anniston and Roswell. Going in we were unsure of how the fields would stack up as there were three races conflicting on the same day. Upon arriving we got our answer, a very respectable bunch. Toyota, Health Net, and Bissell all had teams of 5 loaded with their crit heavy hitters.

Anniston started as usual with just testing the waters to see how everyone’s legs were. About 30 minutes in, a longer series of attacks seem to have everybody breathing a bit harder. I took a opportunity with some free momentum and took a flier. What seemed to be a silly solo jump soon turned in to the winning break. A group bridged up with Evan as well as two each from the other big teams. The bunch behind was happy to let the break sort it out. We lapped up in a matter of minutes and everyone seemed content to let it come down to the sprint. With Jittery having 8 guys it fell on us to do the lead-out. We had a chat with the newer guys about “how” to do it but you never really know until you do. The younger guys did just fine with the tempo from about 10 laps out. The only problem with it all is having 5 man lead-out trains just sitting and waiting. On the final lap it was a bit of a dog fight for the last two corners and it pretty much finished up how we came out of the last corner. I ran 4th and Evan in 6th. Cantwell ran cleanup and went 12th. We had a talk about how things went and what we could do different in Roswell the next day.

As far as I can remember Roswell almost always has a break. I don’t think I’ve done one that didn’t. Cody ran second last year, and was itching after Anniston to use some of his Tour de Georgia form. About 15 minutes in the break formed. One each from the big 4 teams. The group wasn’t 100 meters up the road by the time the big teams were actively blocking. Cody took his lap and again fell on our shoulders to lead-out. This time Health Net took us a bit by surprise, they went with a lap and a half to go. In the scrum for the last corner Jonno and Cody came through 3rd and 4th and Cody ran 2nd again, Jonno went 8th and I came home somewhere around 17th. The younger guys are getting the feel for the leadout, but we all have a bit of fine tuning to do. We’ll get it figured out next time. Up next is Philly week and Tour de Beauce.

Till then, Chad

When will the 2008 Race schedule be posted on the website? Will Jittery Joe’s be represented at the Nature Valley Grand Prix? It was sure great seeing you guys there last year.
