Neil Wins Edgar Soto Memorial (with a little help from his friends)!
Filed Under Race Reports | Posted by Trent |
The 2nd annual Edgar Soto Memorial had been run and won, and we did both!
The four day tour was held around my home town of Nashville Tennesse. It is not an NRC race though I don’t think it’ll be too long before it is. Jittery Joe’s flew in Neil Shirley from San Diego to join myself, Caesar and The Hop, fresh on his come back trail from his broken wrist.
Day one was an 11km time trial, and who would’ve guessed… I won it. That’s a first for this non time trialist, but you can do anything with form. Caesar and Neil ran third and fourth respectively.
The next day the action heated up with a Healthnet vs Jittery Joe’s show down for the 115km hilly circuit race. I had the weight of the yellow jersey on my shoulders along with most of the field. Neil got into the early break and later another break went across. There were eight riders in the break by the finish and Neil ran third. This secured a good GC spot for him. Healthnet won this battle but they haven’t won the war.
The criterium on the following day was held around the streets on Nashie and I was pretty gee’d to win in my home town. It wasn’t to be though, after two laps Caesar and Menzies took off and lapped the field. Once they lapped up we took the incentive to control the race and look after Neil for the overall and Caesar for the stage. Hop and I rode tempo for the second half of the race. For Caesar to out sprint Menzies was a tough call, and as a result ran second.
The final day was always going to be a tough day, a hilly 175km road race ending in a hilltop finish. 11 riders got away pretty early into the stage and once again Hop and I rode tempo on the front, along with Menzies from Healthnet. We were obviously planning to set Neil up for the win. It worked perfectly! Hop did his job early and we gradually pulled back all the rider one by one. After 160km of tempo riding I led it into the climb, and Neil finished the job we started. He put the 19 seconds he needed to put into Murphy to take the overall victory. We won the war..
As well as the overall win, Caesar was 5th, we were on the podium in the stage results everyday, we were second and fourth in the sprint comp and the team effort was awesome.
Cheers Willo
