FINALLY!! Hoppy Wins a Race
Filed Under Race Reports | Posted by Hoppy |
If you hadn’t hear the news, the bean team has got up for another win at yesterday’s 100k US 10k Classic held in the ATL. Some awesome riding by the team saw them get The Hop up for the win in the 80+km/h massive downhill sprint. Here’s how it went : By the time the race start came around at 7:15am both Willo and The Hop had gotten around to pinning their numbers on for the 3rd time since waking up at 5am. I’m sure they would like to thank Waffle House for that scrumptious breakfast. And so the racing beginsand the attacks are coming thick and fast from the get-go. It’s Shirl up the road, then comes back and it’s Kinga up the road, comes back and Big Ev up there, coming back in time for Willo to punch a group off the front and then Ando hits it up the climb with a small group that comes back and even The Hop strolls off the front in a couple of groups. Lots of groups threatened to go away all throughout the race, but it was a 2man effort that really got a good gap going. With 2 of the 11 laps remaining, a big group rolled off the front, and after the dust had settled on some more attacking from the front of the field and also the front group, a huge group of 26 riders went away, containing not 1, not 2, not even 3, but yes ladies and gents, 4 Jittery Joes riders. It was Neil Shirley, Austin King, Evan Elken and The Hop who made the group, which with Elkin and The Hop, was pretty much an ideal situation for the bean teamers. Having equally the largest representation in the break, allowed the boys to have The Hop and Big Ev to relax at the back of the group while King and Shirley, latched onto the back of every group that went up the road. On the last lap, Big Ev was called upon to latch onto a couple of groups, to relieve the pressure from King and Shirley. Making the final turn and seeing the big chicken both King and Shirley knew it was time to let The Hop off his leash. Coming over the crest of the final little rise to hit the final downhill, it was a superb acceleration by Elken to bring the lead sprinting group up the front of the race, having the Hop a couple of spots behind he knew he just had to get over the crest, and sling the Hop in and she’d be a good chance for the win. It was Navigators Camponogaro that hit out first with 2005 winner Emile Abraham, but it was the Hop making a big move through some heavy traffic out in right field, pulling the trusty old “Swoop and Squat” move in next to Camponogara, before punching the gas pedal, hitting the afterburners, and performing a duet with the fat lady that had already begun singing. Bravo. So that’s basically how it went. Last race and first win of the season for The Hop, but it was only an awesome effort by all of the boys to really make it happen, and so Big Ups to ando, willo, shirl, kinga and big ev for making it happen. Catch you in 2007.Comments
