Hoppy Dominates the Festival of Speed

Hi All,

Well after a very tiring week and a bit of crit racing at the USA Crits series, I made the drive from the last race in Anniston, AL to the Dick Lane Velodrome in Atlanta for the first Festival of Speed event of 2006. Under ominious skies, this was the first ride for me on my brand new Louis Garneau Pursuit 9.0 track bike and I was pretty keen to get out there and into the racing.

The first race on the program was the 60 Lap Points Race. Early in the race there were plenty of flyers taken with guys quickly opening up gaps, but coming back to the field after each of the sprints. After about 3 or 4 sprints, I kept the gas on and opened up a gap with Kent Bostick and Steve Hogan the only ones to come with me. We quickly opened a gap on the field and the race was on. We swapped off good and hard and intermittently sprinted and I got enough points up to take the win.

Next up was the 15lap snowball. Each lap up to the 15th is worth it’s number in points. Peter Antonvich got away for the first 7 laps taking all the points, then I hit out with Kent Bostick coming with me and we swapped off and shared the points, but I made sure I got a few more than he did!! I made it through to the sprint final against Steve Hill. I left my run at him a little late got hung up in the bend through the woop section and got very sideways and lost my run, coming up short by the line.

Next up was the keirin. This race is motorpaced for the first 4 1/2 of 6 laps and the it is a free for all for the last lap and a half. I used some old school moves to get Steve Hill to hit out a little early through the bell, and while he tried to stall down the back straight I hit out and got beside him and rode his shoulder all the way around the bend. This time I got a little more traction through the bend and came down the straight with good power to take it out.

Last race of the evening was the Miss and Out, my favourite. I was feeling very rough around the edges by this stage and not too sure how I’d go. I rode the race from 2nd and 3rd wheel and before i knew it we were down to 3 for the final sprint. I went 2nd wheel and gave myself a little room to breath, and hit the gas through the bend to come around Kent Bostick to take the win down the straight.

It was a pretty good night of racing, the next event down at the track is going to be on the 17th of June so if you are near Atlanta and after a good night of cycling and entertainment, check out www.dicklanevelodrome.com for more info.

Cheers, Jeff
