Twilight Criterium
Filed Under Race Reports | Posted by Austin |
This past weekend The Bean Team wrapped up some great criterium racing with some very nice results and a podium appearance. On Saturday, we raced the hometown Athens Twilight Criterium. Twilight is a hotly contested NRC crit known by the cycling community to have very fast racing and huge crowds. The 27th edition didn’t let us down. It was insane! The half mile, rectangle shaped course was absolutely packed with spectators and wild college students, all yelling, cheering and enjoying the evening and what seemed like quite a few brews. All other criteriums after this will just seem like a big let down……Now on to some racing action. The race started off very fast. Word on the street was to fight hard to survive the first 20 minutes without incident. And there was an “incident” a few laps into the race as a large group of riders took a tumble. With all of us ok, it was time to get down to business. Rumor has it Ando might have even got the half-way $500 prime. Good on ya, Ando. Throughout the night, we put on a great show for the hometown crowd, as all of us were active covering moves and getting the team plenty off exposure. In the end, after a surprise addition of 20 laps, Willo took care of Hoppy and in doing saw launched himself to a very nice 6th place finish. Hop held his own for 15th.
The next day, we drove to Roswell, Georgia for the Roswell Criterium. This would turn out to be another hotly contested NRC criterium as all the top teams were present. The peloton took off quick and by the halfway point an odd break of 4 had been established. I say odd because the break contained 4 of the fastest sprinters in the race. Not a bad scenario for us as it would surely fry their legs for the finish. The team gave it a few good pulls to help bring the break back to give Hoppy a good run at the finish. The breaks gap would hang in the 15 to 20 second range until they were finally brought back with under a lap to go making it a day for the bunch gallop. With a few laps to go, I towed Hoppy to the front and put him on the wheel of the other sprinters. In the bunch kick at the end, Hoppy pulled of a very nice podium appearance with a 3rd place. All in all it was a good weekend for The Bean Team. After a few days rest, we’re headed for South Carolina on Wednesday to contest three criteriums before driving to Alabama for the fourth and final criterium of our schedule.
Take care.
